The history of Sioux Falls began at the falls of the Big Sioux River. Lakota and Dakota tribes arrived sometime around the 18th century and, according to early maps, used the falls as a place to trade with French fur trappers. The falls also drew the attention of early explorers. Sioux Falls was founded by land speculators who hoped to build great wealth by claiming prime town sites before the arrival of railroads and settlers.

Sioux Falls boasts several private schools and universities and a public school system that continues to rank high in national test scores.
